From our good friends in Orting, WA comes another worthy nominee for the Brown Car Appreciation Society. This one comes with a little something something under the hood, too. Check it out.
From the ad:
78 ford trailer special factory 460 , ford 9 inch rear. Engine was rebuilt in 98 with a 68 Lincoln cam and heads bored . 20 over, runs on regular gas at 320 hp, C6 transmision, interior, carpet , seats redone in 98, original paint and wheels and hubcaps, nice straight truck, 10 mpg loaded or empty, dual factory tanks, everything works. 2200 Obo , serious buyers only , don’t waste my time and yours with endless emails, emails with # s will be answered only

This is a good chance for a Hooniverse Helpful Hint: taking a picture of a car half in the shade, half in the sun, makes all of it look fuzzy. Finding a balance between blazing sun and pitch black is a good bet.

Still, this truck is in pretty good shape for its age, and is good working condition. With 320HP at your right foot’s disposal and a 3-speed automatic transmission, you certainly wouldn’t have any trouble getting most loads moving and down the road. You’ll definitely need the dual tanks, though.

For $2200, thank God it's 2200 miles away, too.
Just about to start an engine rebuild on the last $2500 car purchase, and i don't think the wife would appreciate another one.
My father used to have a '78 F-150 XLT Lariat Edition in two-tone brown. Sorry, but I just don't see how I could settle for less.
I can see you aspiring to less, but never settling for it.
My dad had a '78 Chevy C-10 454 and its 200 HP was plenty to smoke the tires pretty much at will as well as to get completely sideways if the bed was empty and the traction wasn't perfect. I can't imagine what 320 hp in that chassis with those wheels, tires, and brakes gets you besides a warm reception from your local gas station owners. If you really need that much power you need a newer diesel truck or some kind of muscle car.
With a heavy slide-in camper and a boat on a trailer, I can imagine the extra ponies would be appreciated, though.
I learned to drive in a '78 Custom with the 400. Had the full-time 4WD and 3 speed auto. Was a beast to be sure, but a lot of fun to bomb around at 30 mph on dirt roads with my dad on the passenger side of the bench. Oh, to be 12 again…
Those are the kinds of memories I hope to make with my kids someday. Great stuff.
Wonder if they upgraded any of the running gear to 3/4 ton or 1 ton spec, I'm pretty sure you couldn't get a 460 in a F-150. I love the Camper Special version of this generation Ford Trucks with extra long wheelbase and usually the under bed tool box. <img src="http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/1973-F350SCS_01.jpg"width=500>
A prior owner put the camper special bed of that generation on my 66 F-350. It doesn't have a toolbox, though, but rather a spare tire compartment in the side of the bed.
I would love to have a tool box under the bed of my '92.
You could definitely get the 460 in the F-150 in '78; just not in California. We had one in Arizona.
If this had a column shift 3, I'd be pawing all over to get it.
Would the old 3 speed handle the torque of the 460?
I would think so. It's a pretty reliable transmission.
