Streetwalker: Charger With A Landau Roof

Continuing our "orange" theme for today…

Here’s a helpful hint for anyone trying to sell a car. We all know that providing plenty of information to a potential buyer is helpful, but perhaps writing all of that information on a giant poster that gets displayed in the window is not the best idea.
The poster in question had photos of the car. Not photos during restoration, or while work was being done. Just photos of the car. Since you had to lean over the car to see the photos, it seemed a bit redundant. There were also multiple paragraphs of detailed information, some of it questionable. In fact, there was so much information, I couldn’t actually see the price. Possibly one of the more important tidbits we might need to know.
Also: anything with a Landau Roof looks ridiculous. There are no exceptions to this rule, unless they’re supposed to look ridiculous.

I can't wait to see your picture show up on peopleofwalmart.
Nice car, the Landau gives it a kind of sleep look.

Chrysler design meeting, c. 1972:
Boss: We need to do something with the Charger for next year. It's getting a bit long in the tooth. However, it's the '70s, there's an oil crisis, nobody is buying the car, and I'm wasted on acid. What are your ideas?
Engineer 1: Hey man, quit bogartin' the weed, man.
Engineer 2: [Takes hit of joint, passes it to Engineer 1] Hey man, all it needs is more beads.
Engineer 3: [Takes a sip of coffee, straightens his giant collar] I've sketched something. I call it "triple opera windows".
Engineer 1: [Laughs like a stoner] Who listens to opera, man?
Boss: Fancy people. And they have money. I like it. I also think we should have a convertible version so the man doesn't harsh my buzz. We can't afford to make one though, so let's just throw some vinyl on the roof and make it look like a convertible. Everyone's stoned, they won't notice.
Engineer 3: I'm not stoned.
Boss: You don't make enough to afford one.

I guess the seller really thought if he/she put all of the info on the poster, maybe you would skip looking at the ACTUAL car for questionable repair and interesting additions. I agree that the Landau roof gives it a sleek look.

Not really a landau roof. I think Dodge called this the "Topper". For a landau roof think GM G-body with the vinyl over the back 1/3 of the roof.

Are you suggesting we have an impostor?

Landau is also present on most (all?) of the K-platform cars Chrysler made. Last third of the roof covered with raised vinyl. This looks sleek; the landau makes anything it's attached to look like it's being driven by a retiree.

Well as far as actuall K-platform cars, the Lebaron-K was the only one with a full vinyl roof covering. New Yorker landaus & fifth Ave.s got landau roofs but other than them, I dont think anything else got one… unless im forgeting one.

So where's the picture of the poster? I'm more interested in that than the car!

6. Sivart_R1 Avatar

I can't help it…I want it. thankfully since there is snow showing in the picture, this car is nowhere near me.

7. KillerZomBee Avatar

I love this thing! And I dig the ridiculous roof too! But then again I secretly miss velor shirts and bell bottoms, vans with side-pipes, and Motown on the AM radio…

As a kid, I always thought this generation of B-body was too big and bloaty. I was a smart kid.

I was originally going to comment on the cheesniess of the Charger's vinyl top, window louvers, tack-on spoiler, generic-brand white letter tires and mismatched slot mags. Then I saw the Mini with the checkerboard decal behind it.
I'm letting the Charger off the hook this time.

I only like 2 things about this car:
The impossibly long hood (but not the just-as-long overhang) and the tail lights
But it has a 440 magnum. Then again could just be stickers.

11. nofrillls Avatar

You know, when I read the title in my RSS feed I expected this landaued Charger to be absolutely ridiculous. With the other black trim it's not as heinous as I had imagined [ducks quickly].

I always think of this guy:
<img src="http://static.tvguide.com/MediaBin/Galleries/Imported/BioPix/Ro/Bio_Batch2/martin-landau1.jpg" /img>
But yours works better, since the landau roof is about as classy as a can of Colt 45.

1. BGW Avatar

But Colt 45 works every time. The landau roof? Not so much.

My old (74) Monte has the Landau roof, complete with gaudy Landau badges. When I get around to freshening it up, I plan on stripping off the that damn vinyl. Once it gets to this age, keeping it looking decent (well, as decent as that kind of option can look) is a real challenge.
