Silverstone Classic: All those Aston Martins

Aston Martin 4 [Ed. Note – Sorry for the glut of Aston Martin posts lately, we didn’t intend for them to stack up. Actually, you know what… screw it, there’s no such thing as too many Astons. Carry on!] Aston Martins are built in Gaydon, England, which is 25 miles from Silverstone Circuit. Given that proximity, one might expect a strong representation from one of the UK’s proudest and longest-running marques. As it happened, the word “strong” is not nearly strong enough to describe the turnout. It was as if all the Aston Martins in the Kingdom turned up for this amazing event. Click through for some shots of these brilliant cars. Aston Martin 1 Comparatively, there were not as many Aston Martins on the race track as, say, Cobras or TVRs, but those that were racing were as beautiful as the ones on display. Aston Martin 2 The #7 DP212 pictured below raced in the same class as the Cobras, XKEs, and TVRs. It was much larger than those cars, but held its own on the straights and played violent, heavenly music each time it passed by. Aston Martin DP212 Elsewhere, in the street car display, there was a veritable sea of Aston Martins. A rough calculation totaled somewhere between 250 and 300. Every single car in the photo below is an Aston. I expected to see Sean Connery and Daniel Craig ordering shaken martinis in the vicinity. Alas, only more Aston Martins. Aston Martin 3 The contrast between the English color palette and that of the Italian cars in the next parking lot was striking. (Watch for more on the Italian contingent in subsequent posts.) Aston F Aston Martin was founded in London in 1913. The company has functioned continuously since then. Like many other auto manufacturers, there have been good times and bad, including a bankruptcy in the 1970s and several changes in ownership. There were a few examples of the earlier cars at the show. Aston Martin 5 If you are an Aston Martin Fanboy, the Silverstone Classic is the place for you. If you could figure out a way to tag on a tour of the factory up the road, your head might just explode from all the understated British brilliance. Coincidentally, our own Jeff Glucker was driving new Aston Martins around Scotland at the same time this event was happening. He got the better of the deal, but I am certainly not complaining.
