Well, here it is, another Friday and you know what that means. Every time I think I have a good mystery car you guys nail it in the first five minutes. NO MORE! I’m done being mister nice Schmo so suck it hoons. If this one is guessed in the first post, the next Mystery Car! will be a picture of grass or the side of a barn. Good luck, we are all counting on you.
Mystery Car!
-
This is a major long shot, but how about a
Lola Mk VI (aka lola GT) -
Porsche 908/3
-
I'm still going to keep saying Mustang II, it's bound to be the right answer eventually. After we've seen pictures of every other car in the world, including the NSX.
-
the color was right, the car was not; as usual, the mystery car is not a Piper GTR
-
It's a fescue with a little rye mixed in.
-
Very sports racery. That looks like a Hewland transmission end cover. The robustness of the axle shaft and upright lead me to believe it has some torque. I'm going to say it's some old Can Am sports racer.
Off to perform some google-fu. -
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the double wishbone looks to be Lotus-ish, as in one of their early F1 cars. Initial guess, Lotus 35?
-
1968 Marcos Mantis XP.

There was an article on it a while back in one of the car magazines in which the owner made a remark about that pulley and belt position. I don't remember which magazine, but the pulley was familiar, as was the color (um, of the car, not of the pulley or belt).
-
I thought the pulley looked out of place for a race car, but figured it might have been an addition for vintage race convenience. I should have noticed the speedometer cable snaking across the framing.
Interesting car with an interesting story; I'd love to see it in person. -
Good call sir! I was going to do a quick write up on this car but I didn't have time today.
-
-
thanks for the link to the original!
-
-
ARGH that's the car I meant to look up when I looked for the Piper GTR – damn you crazy-low-slung-late-60s-British-low-volume-Le-Mans-prototypes!
-
Mighty impressive.
Man, that has way more angles than any NSX I have ever seen. To wit:

OK, now I think we shouldn't have commented and let you guess first, that would have been funnier.
Good job!
-
-
Yeah, that was crazy ol muthalovin that always guessed NSX. Thanks for stealing his thunder.
-
that's who it was!!! if only I could go back and edit!
-
-
That third point might not have been so bad….

Clearly not an NSX. At least I don't think so…
-
Googlemobile? 😉
-
No, the hint was "side of a barn" though they are also associated with several varieties of grass besides the stuff poking up in the lower left of the photo….
-
-
-
Damn…I was gonna guess DIXIE CHOPPER.
-
Ok I just scared myself, took one look at the picture and knew right away it was a race car because it had what was obviously a Hewland transaxle and a transaxle mounted alternator. I need to get out more…

Marcos mantis XP….picture taken at british car show in Chico, California.

The Mantis XP now has a Chrysler V8 in it.
