Morning Qualifying

Rolf says "hello"

Good morning, Hooniverse.   Today marks the beginning of what I hope is a new daily feature, Morning Qualifying, where I’ll show off a bit of motorsport history and say something clever or thought provoking about it.   You, in turn, will be entertained, and say something clever or thought provoking in kind in the comment section.  Everybody wins!
Today’s photo is a study in multitasking as Rolf Stommelen takes a moment from trying to win the 1973 Targa Florio to wave at a photographer/fan known only as “David”.  So today, while you navigate your busy Monday, try to channel your inner Rolf.   Remember, if Rolf can waive hello to a fan while simultaneously driving the nuts off his Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT12 and not kill dozens of Sicilian spectators in the process, then maybe, perhaps, we can be nice in the midst of our busy day too.  Just a thought.

Editor’s Note: Surprise! Everyone welcome Scroggs on board! It’s taken me almost two years of nagging and pestering, but he’s finally agreed to join us, and bring along his massive obsession with vintage auto racing. He has one of the most impressive photo and video collections out there, and we’re really happy he’s agreed to come share with us. -MB

  1. This is much better than listening to 15 drunk people talk at once. Makes me wish I'd worn the crested blazer today.

  2. It's about flipping time! Welcome to the 'Verse, Scroggs! I look forward to your pants-tent-producing pictures of cars.
Now, I must go multitask: review drawings, read Hooniverse, and flip off wave to my boss.

  3. Damn.. even his byline looks good.
Quick, someone add Esq. to Alex's so he doesn't get upset (again)

        1. You're the second person this week to imply I had a dry wit. I'll try wrapping it in moist towelettes, perhaps that will help.

  4. My cousin who raced smaller road racing bikes (Minsk, CZ 125) in then USSR told once that damn bike was so slow he could check spectators expressions. On WOT. On long main straight. Could've as well waive to onlookers.

  5. I'm actually quite impressed by the versatility of the Alfa Romeo's badge-and-shield. Either I've been brainwashed, or that does look a lot better than I'd imagine it without.
