When a movie is about Corvettes and summer, what could possibly go wrong?
The 1978 Metro Goldwyn Mayer flick Corvette Summer sure shows the possibilities of how such a seemly perfect mash-up could turn into an unmitigated cluster you-know-what. This was Mark Hamill’s follow up film to the blockbuster Star Wars and proves that (A) there’s truth to the legend of the Sophomore slump, and (B) he probably should have just stayed on Tatooine.
With an overall 57% rating on Rottontomatoes, Corvette Summer’s probably not the Vette movie you’re looking for, but it is in fact the one that we have. It’s not a bad movie, but then again, it is kind of bad. The plot centers on Hamill’s character, a high school senior named Kenny Dantley, who because he lives in the Valley decides to attack his boredom by building the Corvette that he sketched on the cover of his American History text book way back in 7th grade. Annie Potts plays a Hollywood stereotypical hooker with a heart of gold and she helps Kenny try and get his prized ‘Vette back after it is unceremoniously stolen.
That takes them to Vegas, which is the perfect location for the pilfered ride as Corvette Summer’s eponymous prop device is perhaps one of the ugliest Corvettes on the planet. How ugly is it? Well, make the jump to watch the trailer and see for yourself. Woof!

I always thought there was a really good movie trapped inside Corvette Summer, screaming to get out.

I always thought there was a really good Corvette trapped inside that monstrosity, screaming to get out.

I’ve seen worse, and this is far enough out of recent memory to watch again even if I’m only laughing at how bad it is; that and despite how ugly that Vette is, it likely sounds better than my neighbor’s little Japanese fart car that he zooms up and down the block all hours of the day and night..

I remember seeing this and being very disappointed in Luke Skywalker.

Nothing imagined by a seventh grader should be allowed to become reality.

Well, I’m going to go against the grain here and say that I thought that Corvette was about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
But that said, at that point in my life I probably had no idea what a C3 was supposed to look like. I had to wait until I was five until I knew that. -
Ummm… Am I seeing things or is that “Corvette” right-hand-drive?
-
Yes, that was part of the customization.

But why?!?!?
And that can’t have been easy. Apparently it was hard enough to warrant Australians building a whole new car, instead of converting Corvettes. Which is funny, because someone used an Australian one to build a replica of the “Corvette Summer” car.
Seriously, someone wanted a replica.
Also, read this article that covers RHD Corvettes, Australian Corvettes, and “Corvette Summer” replicas. It’s pretty funny as well.

I have always wanted to see this movie, but never bad enough to actually go through the effort of tracking it down.
