At the end of the film Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart’s character Rick walks off into the fog – not with the girl – but with his friend Captain Renault, to whom he says- Louis, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. If that friendship included WRC racing, this would be the road upon which Bogie and his thin-mustachioed co-piolt would train.

Stretching across the Atlas Mountains, about 200 km south of Casablanca, this road convulses in this way for miles over the hard-scrabble desert peaks.
