  1. This is a sculpture by Rowland Emmet called “The Exploratory Moon-Probe Lunacycle M.A.U.D.”, that we had on display. (Just to keep this car related, Emmet created Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang for the movie of the same name.) We packed it up on MOnday.

It was made in the late 1960s and still travels around in the original custom made, British Rail Red shipping crates (although, since the shipping crates themselves are artifacts, they get put inside modern plywood crates.)

The crates are filled with hand drawn plans of how to store the sculpture, frequently using its own hardware to secure it.

I just think it’s a trip to see these things from the days when draftsmen worked on tables with pens and french curves and always wrote in a slightly tilted all-caps.

    1. Here’s a little film we made about the Lunacycle, with a brief appearance from Batshitbox (background) and also his evergreen Hooniverse Asks… answer, the Lunar Rover.

    3. European kings used to give each other expensive gifts: top notch craftsmanship, noble materials, but no taste… These were sent around in such custom made boxes, too, often shaped like a down-rendered version of the content, like instrument cases.
The Green Vault in Dresden used to devote a dedicated room just for these.

  2. Awesome racing! …but I’m really curious about what the Studebaker (…I think?) behind them is doing there. Did they have much presence in the UK? Is it an American import owned by a collector…? Either way, it sounds pretty darn good.

    1. It’s lhd so probably imported specially for this for something different, there was a Tatra racing too.
