Last Call: The Softer Side of Germany Edition

By Robert Emslie May 26, 2017

As you all head off into the weekend, which will be a long one for many of you, I’d like to leave you with this amazing image of cherry trees blossoming along the aptly named Cherry Blossom Avenue in Bonn Germany. Being able to see sights like this are why the automobile became so popular in the first place. Here it’s like driving under a school of magical jellyfish… in Germany.
Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day.  It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

  1. Some people I know would want those trees cut down because falling blossoms, falling leaves, and falling cherries make such a mess.
    But not me.

  2. Must be a gift from the Japanese embassy, I remember* cherry blossoms to be white in Germany.
Else, exciting times: planning details of my AZ trip (both professionally and as a tourist), and awaiting delivery of my new old van. Also, the coolant leak on the P-car seems to be slack in a jubilee clip (needs confirmation by drying and driving), and the van dealer told me he might have a guy to fix the rust (on the P-car, not the 2014 Vivaro).
    * I have an education in microscopy and optics, no botanics.

    1. This popped up in my YouTube feed the other day. It’s as impressive as it is vaccinating against starting such a project…to me.

The Vivaro should be a bit easier to deal with, even though it’s almost sacrilege to go out looking for a VW and ending up buying an Opel. =8^)

      1. It’s also a Vauxhall, Renault, and Nissan, thanks to badge engineering. Parts are dirt cheap, they go 250+kkm under craftmen’s “care”, and drilling a hole to fix, say, a curtain, doesn’t remove 5kUSD in value…
And it still beats a Neoplan in mileage!

        1. The snooker table sends it over the top! My aunt & uncle travelled with a pair of recliner chairs in their 30′ caravan – one of the reasons they had to upgrade the tow vehicle no doubt.

      2. Just watched the video (well part of it), I agree I am happy to see it after someone else has done it. It is a bit hard to get some of the detail though – to compare with how I might have done it! – but then I am comparing it to the amount of detail given in the build diary of Rob Gray’s Wotthehellizat I-H 6×6 camper. Fair warning: if you look into that one, be prepared to sacrifice hours!

    1. I assume the Malibu is piloted by a monumentally confused tourist (especially since it’s a Malibu wearing Washington plates)?

      1. They’re at the scenic overlook on the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, which I’m surprised they got that many parking spots at, especially on a holiday weekend. It’s a matter of taking a few, waiting for more riders to show, and taking every spot that opens up until you have the whole row.
Must be early in the ride, there’s a hundred there. I saw what might have been a breakaway group around 3 in the afternoon, only 35 or so.

    1. Either proper red or proper brown would fit better, but in that machine on the autobahn, you’d need something dark to cover the sweat stains: When you’re going 300+, no semi driver will see you coming and virtually park 40tons into your lane.

      1. Yeah, well, how have they ended up with that top speed figure. I was thinking it’s purely theoretical or maybe recorded on some Ehra-Lessien-type test track, but no, there’s this hairy autobahn night run video with nearly 360 kph. Car has been sold it seems, btw.

  3. So on Saturday I operated the most expensive vehicle I’ve ever driven. Behold:

(Case IH 550HD Steiger 4WD tractor + Case IH 1265 36-row, 20″-spacing planter, both my dad’s… I operated for about 5 hours and planted soybeans on about 1/4th of the square mile where the family farm is. Most of the time the tractor steered itself thanks to real-time kinematic GPS, a necessity to keep the planter row units running more or less down the center of the gaps between the corn rows that were planted with the same planter last year.)

    1. Does it come with the programming to create “UFO crop circles” or has that played out by now?
