In Japan, slammed and stretched scooters have been a legitimate thing for a long time, and they don’t come much lower or longer than this one. It doesn’t seem very practical, but it might get some use, seeing as it was captured parked at the curb.

I thought the purpose of a lengthened swingarm was to prevent high-powered drag bikes from rearing up on hard takeoffs. What’s the point here? I would think the handling would suck.
-
The handling is, let’s say… different.
Note: Annoying video channel, just skip to 0:17 through 0:56. And turn the audio off.

Great control…but why no helmet?

People put them on street bikes all the time, it ruins them for regular riding. I don’t really see a problem with scooters so much. They’re not made to go fast
-
The fact that scooters aren’t fast makes it even more ridiculous. The whole purpose of the scooter is that it’s nimble and fits in small spaces. Extend the swingarm and you lose both of those qualities. (But at least you won’t be accidentally popping wheelies that you didn’t have the power to do anyway.)
-
Not fast? The Suzuki Burgman and BMW C series are both available in 650cc displacements, providing horses in the 50 – 60 range, and topping out near The Ton.
Even the 400cc versions have 30 -35 hp and top out over 90 mph.-
Not drag-bike fast. I can intentionally do wheelies on my bicycle. The point is, this mod was done not because it was functionally relevant, but because some dipshit thought it looked cool. It’s like when the kid down the street put a tow hook on his Civic Si, a car which he doesn’t even drive in the rain (much less takes to the track).

It might be the ridiculousness of it all that makes me kind of like it
-
Well, I’ll give you that. I’ve always preferred sleepers– vehicles that look normal but hide awesome performance. I’m not a fan of insubstantial ostentation.
-
I feel scooters are much like golf carts. They’re a little ridiculous to begin with… so why not?

It’s no different than all the extreme rake of modified ’70s muscle cars, trying to copy the appearance of drag cars.

Very good point– that was stupid, too. But at least muscle cars did have some power. A more fitting analogy would be an extremely raked Ford Pinto, which, like a scooter, was far too underpowered to make use of the modification.
-
I can do you one better: back in the late ’70s, I saw a Datsun F-10 hatchback with a jacked-up rear end. Even though the “F” stood for FWD, and it had four-wheel independent suspension.
-
-
Point noted, though for purposes of pedantism, I must inform you that your pictured example is neither a muscle car nor was it manufactured in the 1970’s.
-
Not manufactured in the ’70s, but it is modified in the _style_ popular with customizers, and popular in that era.
What would you call it? A pony car? Street machine? It’s too new to be a “hot rod.”-
Pony car is acceptable, but since the Barracuda beat the Mustang to the showrooms by a couple weeks, I prefer fish car.

Darksiding too, but overall “I don’t even” sums it up I think!
I saw these around my town (a college town) a few years ago. They were mostly Honda Ruckus and the like, I think I’ve maybe seen one in the past year
Fred was balancing real good until Bob lit that firecracker. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7419482fe44a457b9e7dfd36ec6b83ee4f855f414aed804556a96cf8e5911573.jpg
CityBike Magazine, a monthly tabloid devoted to motorcycling and published in San Francisco, has gone out of print after more than 30 years.

These days, though, that phrase doesn’t have the bells of doom tolling behind it. Like “The Onion”, they’ve moved their wisecrackery to the web. What’s better, their website uses Disqus for commenting! It’s like Two-Wheel-Tuesday every day over there!
What is the purpose of the idler sprocket on the swingarm? Tensioner?
