The equivalent of USD$4 per gallon the other day here in Melbourne. I say the other day because there is a bizarre price cycle here where the price fluctuates USD$0.50 roughly every week and lately it becomes more expensive than small towns in the country with smaller volumes and higher transport costs. The 2nd-last tank I got was USD$3.50 (AUD$1.23 per litre instead of $1.40)
Now waiting for Europeans to come in with some much higher numbers…

Fluctuations I saw last Thursday: 12.09 NOK/litre to 16.50 NOK/litre within the hour. Low price cycle is Monday and Thursday mornings. Nothing makes sense with this stuff.

1/3 extra is pretty bad! I think the prices here jump up in one go then drop down gradually. Years ago on my way home I got to my usual place a little later than normal and the price had gone up, so turned around to the previous one. It was worth it because I had to fill up 100 litres!

It’s working just like that here, too – but this case was the worst I’ve seen. Normally the fluctuation is 1,50-2 NOK.
…but what takes 100 litres? Commercial truck?

This is what it looks like, from the standard ute it has raised heavy duty suspension, heavy duty air cleaner, bull bar, sump guard, underbody rock flaps and stone guards, Hydratrak viscous LSD, taller profile LT all-terrain tyres, dual fuel tanks and third seat with the manual transmission. Plus stickers.

I live in a fantasy land of tools and equipment.
Today I used what has to be, hands down, the singularly most expensive hand held power tool I’ve ever handled. The “Festool Domino XL“. At $1430.00 it’s more than my month’s rent, and approaching the price of a serviceable Bridgeport mill or motorcycle.
(The XL is the Big Yin, dwarfing the $990.00 Domino)

Why was I wielding this ridiculous device? Atomic Toasters used to have a weekly post called “Sometimes Free Stuff Isn’t Worth It” in which the Toasters would find things on Craigslist for free that promised nothing but wallet lightening misery. Occasionally I would present a real life example of some free shit that I toyed around with, on which I either broke even on or took a bath. This might be one or the other.
The museum I work in abandoned some nice teak wood rocking chairs just because the runners had broken. “I can fix that”, I thought. Hilarity ensued. (Hilarity involved a pencil and paper, AutoCad, Adobe Illustrator, a laser cutter, MasterCam, a Haas SR100 sheet router, jointer, planer, and 2″ x 8-1/2″ x 48″ of Maple.)
(Truth be told, I could have got by with the laser cutter, 38″ of Maple, and a band saw, but there would be more sanding, and I hate sanding, even with the Fesdrool sander.)
Ta-DAH! I made some new runners out of different wood. It’s a composite rocking chair.

The original runners were installed with “dominos”, generically known as floating tenons, so that’s what I put the new ones on with. ‘Cause I live in a fantasy land of tools and equipment.
Atomic Toasters SFSIWI bottom line: 16 hours on someone else’s equipment/software fixing a chair for my back yard… I hope my bottom line gets to send 16 hours sitting in the damned thing before it breaks again!

On the plus side, you didn’t have to buy the Domino, you merely got to use it. There are 2 camps when it comes to Festool: those who feel it is worth every penny it costs and those who can’t figure out why anyone would spend that much money for a tool. While I personally believe that Festool equipment is top-notch I blanch at the thought of paying their entry fee. Other manufacturers have caught up to them in terms of some of the tools they offer. The Domino is a bit of a different animal since its shape is protected by patent/copyright but there are other floating joinery methods out there that will do the same thing for way less money. Their track saw, for example, can be had from DeWalt, Triton, and others for 1/4-1/3 the cost with 90-95% performance. In short, Festool’s excellence has trickled down into the market at substantial savings. They need to continue to innovate in order to justify their prices.

I’ve got their smallest D-handled drill/driver. It was expensive, but I use it in an way that replaces a 1000 dollar air screwdriver. Some of their tools seem to innovate, others just seem to be exorbitant just to match the brand.

Jayne and her husband of the time star in a Hercules movie in the new season of MST3k on Netflix. This being a Hercules movie there is a lack of what made her famous on display. Instead of you get to see Mr. Hargitay in the shortest skirts possible. I swear the Hercules movies should have been labeled “For the ladies” back in the day.

Got back to giving the truck some attention. Only about 2000 miles in the last year.
Replaced the cruise control buttons ($25 ebay) and felt better about the old thing.
Cleaned inside and out, rotated the tires (and air- one was 12psi) and added coolant. That’s it.
Dents aside, not too bad for 250k.

Spent a few hours this morning begining to mock up the drivers side exhaust manifold for my Turbo 4.8 S10 project.
The tack welds are pretty ugly but they are good enough to hold it together for test fitting. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough pipe to finish. Still I don’t think it’s horrible for a first try. It would be much easier if there was no steering shaft to deal with. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c318275ec066a8c2e4fc44b9812aa9600ce36618a6616a476c66f33faabe5ae5.jpg
I think I will remove the last 30* bend and allow the fourth runner to join the others at a more gradual bend. Once I had it out of the truck I realized that as it is now the fourth runner would be fighting the flow from the third if I continued.

Interesting idea to use the tee pieces, it is almost a shame they have radiussed joins though.

I realize it’s not perfect, but the stock cast manifold has some pretty tight spots inside as well. This is all pre turbo so I’m really not sure how much having larger nicer bends would help.
I’m just going to keep telling myself that this manifold will keep the exhaust velocity high and help spool whatever turbo it ends up feeding.

Just putting this out there: my brother in law just came across a stash of rolls/ Bentley parts and service manuals, roughly 50 books, 1952- 1980. He’s not looking to make a fortune off them, just wants them to find a home where they will serve a purpose. Any interest?
