As cars have become infinitely more reliable, and requiring of less regular maintenance, certain aspects of the Service Station service has faded from our lexicon. One of those was the lube rack, where regular application of axle grease was applied through the various grease nipples, or Zerk fittings, common throughout chassis’ back in the day.
The advancement in automotive lubrication to lifetime sealed fittings has proved a bust to those seeking service station employment. And, if Life Magazine‘s vast photo archive is to be believed, it also probably hasn’t been so great for small town beauty queens either.
BTW, does anybody else think then guy kneeling on the right looks like a beardless Scroggzilla?
