Established in 1870, the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine was originally intended as a spin-off of Freemasonry for tipplers. Now called the Shriner’s International and well known for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children as well as red fezz hats, the organization is also a mainstay of many community parades, weaving about in quarter-scale cars powered by lawn mower engines.

This sad little Metropolitan hails from an era when Montgomery Alabama’s Alcazar Temple maintained a clown unit, the intent of which was probably to put kids into the Shriner’s Hospital for Children from the sheer  terror of clowns. And yes, those do appear to be prophylactics in the foreground. Kind of makes you wonder what the heck is going on there.

  1. Shrine Temple Clown Unit. If I could play a musical instrument besides the stereo, this would be my new band name.

  2. Looks like it might be in NOLA someplace, waiting for a future Mardi Gras Parade.
