The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Dustin Shuler, creator of Chicago’s Cermak Plaza Car Spindle, has passed away.
Shuler died May 4th of pancreatic cancer at the age of 61. Based in LA, the artist was known for large scale art installations, and the 1989 Cermak Plaza skewer was the best known of them.
The cars on the spindle were – top to bottom – ’67 Beetle, ’76 2002 (license plate “DAVE”), ’81 Escort, “73 Capri, ’78 Mustang II, ’81 Grand Prix, ’81 LTD and an ’80 Grand Marquis. The cars were all mounted on a pointed shaft, which was surrounded by Armco barriers at the base.
While the artist succumbed at an earliy age, he out-lived the spindle as it was torn down in 2008 to make way for a Walgreens. His other car-related works included the performance art event of dropping a giant spike through a 1959 Cadillac, and “Dance” a row of twelve cars paired in inverted Vs for the 2004 Sarasota Season of Sculpture. In another work, he splayed car bodies on walls like animal pelts, even posing with a hunting rifle and retriever next next a VW thusly displayed.

Hoon Obit – The Chicago Car Spindle Artist Passes Away
-
Car art > art cars
RIP -
I was bummed to learn that the spindle had been torn down before my road trip to Chicago last year.
-
That's too bad. Its things like this installment that make traveling cross-country more enjoyable.
-
I really wished they would have relocated it rather then kill it. The news reports had the typical interviews, " good riddance! " to real tears. Now all we have left is to look at Jeff Koons and his creations.
-
RIP. I loved the spindle, and was sort of bummed to hear about its demise. Then again, it's not the first time something cool has bitten the dust while many more thosands of uninteresting buildings and "sculptures" remain standing. You just have to enjoy them while you have them.
-
And once it was torn down, nobody ever had a reason to visit Berwyn again.
-
Also at the risk of sounding like a huge dick, the Spindle was in Berwyn…not Chicago. Just sayin'…
-
Berwyn's a suburb of Chicago. People have heard of Chicago.
-
-
GIC actually took me on a date to see that. Totally worth it.
-
Is anyone else blown away by how HUGE a Beetle looks when it's splayed out on the wall like that? Wow!
The world is a better place for your art, Mr. Shuler. -
3 cars I'd like to have , Mustang II, Ford Capri and VW Bug.
