We don’t get political here at Hooniverse, but what we do do is offer somewhere to escape to when the world is heavy with grim omens. And what better form of escape is there for the octane-veined motive-power enthusiast than a field packed with glittering supercars?
The 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed was impeccably timed to coincide with the half-hour British summer, and wading through the sea of supercars was a distinctly upbeat moment (not spoilt at all by the fact that I had just been hurled up the hillclimb in an Aston Martin). After reaching the ‘top’, the Bugatti, Ferraris, Mclarens and many, many more assembled ready for the return trip. The video beyond the jump is what it looked, and sounded like.

On uploading my shaky HTC M8 footage to Youtube, their digital stabilisation software has given things an oddly dreamlike, woozy quality that strongly suggests a bit of a session on the 4:20 – apologies if the video forces you to enjoy your lunch a second time from a new and wholly unexpected direction.
Yeah, I know. Today’s supercars aren’t really the stuff of Hooniverse… but one day they will. Some day we might be saying “do you remember the Bugatti Chiron?”. We need to enjoy this stuff while we can.
Get yo’ ass to Goodwood next year. It should be on the bucket-list of anybody who cares about cars.

    You don’t get political……… after you referred to politics????
    Statistically, about half of the readership does not have “sorrows” to be drowned.

      Statistically, and in actuality, many members of the Hooniverseriat are not in the USA,( or in Britain with it’s 50ish/50ish Brexit decision.)
      Schadenfreude is only one of the words observers might use to describe their reaction to the political situation in the USA, or perhaps the demise of politics as it has been known since WW2.
      And puzzlement that someone who lost the popular vote by 2.5 million votes can be a winner.
      And of course there is this inconvenient fact for Trump supporters as well.

      You are of course right, Hooniverse is not a political forum, but it is a factual one.

        Speaking of facts, any person who mentions the popular vote is automatically removed from my “credible” list. The popular vote has ALWAYS been entirely irrelevent….and for good reason.
        USA has never been a direct democracy. Direct democracy was considered by the Framers, but was quickly rejected because it allowed for Tyranny of the Majority…which I can assure you would have doomed USA to being just another banana republic. Slavery would have thrived for many more decades, homosexuals would be in jail, and many other liberties Americans enjoy would not exist in a direct democracy.
        While many are upset about Clinton’s loss, keep in mind that the Electoral College, while counter-intuitive, creates the best results for the nation, and the world.

          I am, of course, heartbroken that I’m not on your ‘credible’ list.
          I live in a country that changed it’s electoral system so that the popular vote has to be reflected in the governments make up. It is similar to the system used in Germany and more than a quarter of the nations on the planet.
          I was taught a history that said the demise of slavery in the western world was due to the efforts of Christians such as Wilberforce in the 17th century and not to any American effort until Lincoln and the American Civil War.I further note that some of your founding fathers who wrote your constitution were slave owners. My country has long been in advance of civil rights for people, such as truly universal sufferage and gay marriage, despite not being gifted with the US political system.
          As for ‘banana republics’? Any inquiry of the words’ meaning will reveal that they only became possible because of the meddling of American corporates led by rich men of a right wing political persuasion. Precisely the same elite group of people that have just become your new government.
          Anyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

            Respectfully, this is a well-trodden path that leads exactly nowhere. It is intellectually vapid to impose contemporary social values on historical figures. Their’s was a different world, just as our descendants will likely view human civilization of 2017 as shockingly barbaric. Such sniveling may make you feel superior, but it reveals only childlike understanding of history, and humanity.
            Most importantly, the Founding Fathers created a uniquely dynamic system of Governance. They imbued it with an ability to adapt to cultural change. Slavery was ended 77 years after the Constitution was ratified. Today, USA, nearly 250 years since its founding, remains unparalleled in enabling greater liberty and more economic success than any nation in world history. Any attempt to deny the significance of the Framers of the US Constitution, and the Nation it created, is both ignorant and arrogant.

            Thank you for leaving most of my points uncontested.
            Hooniverse is an English speaking website with worldwide following, not just a little piece of your perceived, (and judging by your moniker, right wing, might is right), paradigm bubble. The USA is indeed one of the many countries of the world with no more or less a special place in moral values than any other country- indeed judging by past behaviour as a nation, perhaps less than some. A thin-skinned attack on the messenger rather than addressing actual facts diminishes your own poorly framed arguments.
            This is a website that’s full title begins with www. standing for ‘world wide web’. Not, ‘made in the USA’. We know you have a new president and good luck with that. I think that the point made in the lead article was that we might all be tired of politics as a result of the bruising campaign, whatever the result, run only in your country. I’m sure that you, along with many of your fellow countrymen, are rightly proud of many of the achievements of your country, but surely not all of them?
            Either way the days of US exceptionalism appear to have been over for some time now. The average American is no longer the healthiest, wealthiest citizen on the planet and some of us live in countries that seem to have done better.
            I know my response may irritate you and likely won’t change your viewpoints, judging by your characterisation of my position as ‘snivelling’, ‘arrogant’ and ‘ignorant’.
            I respectfully put to you, Ms Callahan, that your understanding in a discussion comes from listening to the opposing viewpoint and any facts, and modifying your understanding accordingly. I regretfully conclude that no matter how cogent my response, your positions are so entrenched and your mind so closed to an unfamiliar, (to you), viewpoint that understanding will not occur.
            I must demur from further discussion, but feel free to have the last word. People like you always seem to want it, even when they have nothing to say.

      Yup: The metallic ‘french blue’ car was the Alpine teaser concept — given away by the ‘not ready for production’ blade rear view mirrors.
      I don’t know what chassis or engine the concept was built around to get it up the hill at Goodwood.
