Caravan to Canepa – Part One

securedownload-3

Last Saturday, Bay Area Hoons caravanned from Oakland to the Santa Cruz Mountains for the Canepa Cars & Coffee event. I am breaking this trip into two segments because honestly, there is so much awesome, I’m afraid of melting the internet.

Vwminispeedster and his dad Henry, the hosts of Seconds Saturdays, organized this event. The rendezvous point was Henry’s garage, and about a dozen or so cars made it.

I hitched a ride with the Hanzels in a CNG-powered Crown Vic. The ride was comfortable. The handcuff-compatible rear shoulder belt that I wore was…painful.

The diversity of cars cannot be overstated. The lede photo captures it all. Stu_Rock’s Pug between two Monterey-ready Audi ur-Quattros. But just between you and me, the gray Audi’s owner was not amused.

The first car I speed-walked to upon arriving at Canepa was this Maserati Biturbo. I had a really nice chat with the owner and his wife. The owner was a bit frustrated with his baby and laughed when I told him that I have a Biturbo engined-coffee table. I regret turning down the offer to take it for a spin around the block. The interior was unlike any other car I have sat in. The seats were so rich and creamy, like buttah.

I cheated with this photo of the two Jags. This was taken at the body shop next door.

I’ll conclude Part 1 with this WTF grouping. Stay tuned for Part 2, which includes nine Porsche 959s, countless 300SL Gullwings and roadsters, a Dusenberg, and a stainless steel shop bench that blew Tim O.’s mind.

I am amused that the gray ur-Quattro's owner was not amused.

Sounds like when my LeMons car was on display at SEMA. The ponytailed owner of the new Camaro parked next to it was definitely not amused, and even asked to move his car.
I'm sure he was even more chapped that my car got more attention than his.

    Background spotting:
One-of-100 CLK DTM AMG CÖP (CÜP?) behind the Boxster beside the ur-Quattro owned by the guy who is not amused.
From this angle in the thumbnail looks like:

    What it is:
    I don't know.
    Why this post structure:
    I don't know either.

I had no idea the CLK DTM was so rare.
The blue sedan is a Ford Cortina. See second picture, foreground. The owner also has a Dodge Scamp and a 1980s Dodge Charger, among other things.

There's also 80 convertibles, but those are even sillyer.

I can't believe turning a single nut a quarter of a turn is what kept me from making it to this… The level of my frustration with that fact is not conveyable by mere words.

Dude, you missed out. I literally yelped when I stepped into the storage facility. They had a Dusenberg owners manual just sitting on the bench. The shop was amazeballs.

I wasn't able to attend, but I have a great excuse: A friend of mine invited me to his car club's annual picnic in Napa.
What so special about this? He drives a 1949 Rolls Royce…

My jaw was sore from so much dropping.
I was going to make a joke about my monocle falling out…but then one of the lenses to my Ray Bans actually fell out.

Agreed on the face hurting. So much smiling from "HEY LOOK AT THAT!!" to "HEY ANOTHER 959!!"
Also, one of the red 959s was the LAST ONE ever built. So cool. And the 928 32' Ford hot rod. And the Duesey. And the Tyrrell. And…..

I was telling my wife it was a bit like going to the Louvre in Paris.
You start thinking about famous paintings and other art, then you realize it's there. Like, the real one. Like, the actual Venus di Milo is right there where you could spit gum on it.
That's how it was at Canepa, particularly with the upstairs museum.
For the record, Daisy's favorite was the 917 upstairs. She forgot the name, but was like "you know…the one that could do 0-200 in under 12 seconds…?"

The red hot rod with the Porsche engine sticking out. That's from a 928?

If it's the same one that was featured in one of the major street-rodding magazines a few years ago, it's not just the engine from a 928, but the complete drive train, rear-mounted transmission and all. IIRC, it had quite few interesting tricks going on in the chassis and suspension department too. Not a bad place for the remains of a crash-damaged and uneconomical to repair land shark.

It was a memorable weekend for sure. Super-Spouse actually rode in the ZomBee for the trip, only the second time in 5 years she's agreed to ride in it. And THIS time there weren't even any tow trucks involved!!
Those of us in the south bay caught the caravan just as they started up wonderful Hwy 17 through the Santa Cruz mountains. In our group we had the Venerable ZomBee, a teammate's matching MGBGT, a Nissan Leaf and StuRock's plucky diesel Peugeot. Talk about your odd mixes.
Kudos to Chris & Henry Hanzel for setting this up. And my apologies to any parents for the colorful language that kept blurting out of my mouth mid conversation… "HOLY @#$%& A "_____"!!!1!
Here's a shot of the parking lot. A couple "Proper" sports cars, and a bunch of German crap. The entire property was mindboggling with the mix of cool, rare and fast vehicles. And THEN we got to go see the even cooler stuff INSIDE.
