Remember auto shows? The big auto shows like Detroit, L.A., Chicago? Perhaps Geneva or Munich? Yeah, in the last six years or so they got greatly reduced. I blame the speed of the media, instant access to news, lazy auto journalists, and cheap auto makers. And that killed the attendance, too. But the shows still go on and today is day 1 of of the two press days.
Our coverage of the shows has never been great. It was usually a photo dump of the stuff we saw walking around the show floor, being served fancy lattes by automakers. The good news is that the lattes are still here, just fewer of them. The better news is that our coverage remains the same! So here is your photo dump. Enjoy it.
Few notes:
- Genesis seems to want to dominate the luxury market. They gave some excellent concepts in addition to excellent line-up of cars.
- Ford, specifically Ford Motorsports, has some great cars. The Mustang GTD is amazing in person. The F150 Lightning Switchgear, basically a Lightning Raptor, looks super cool. The suspension must have been a challenging design.
- I’m in love with the new Land Cruiser, Tacoma, and Lexus GX. I cannot wait to drive them.
- The new Subaru Forester looks much better in person. And it still feels like the old Forester, with big windows and sunroof. I wish it was available with the turbo engine.
- The midsize pickup market seems more competitive than full-size. I honestly don’t know which I’d choose: new Ranger, new Tacoma, or the recently new GM twins. And the Nissan Frontier is there, which I actually like quite a lot, but I don’t think it can hold up to the others.
- The Lexus LS and the Lexus GS500 exist. And it is a damn shame that they are so forgotten.
- The new Porsche Macan looks great but it is an EV only, which is sad. And the interior is all screens, which is sadder.
