For whatever reason, the Saab 9-5 was the ride of choice for many jocks and preps at my high school. A friend of mine had a dark blue one that literally blew up on the highway. I’m not ragging on Saabs though, because I actually quite like them, and once worked at a dealership that sold used ones.
Speaking of used Saabs, the 1976 Saab 99 EMS shown above, is an old school Swedish gem in need of a bit of help.
This retro two-door Saab showed up on eBay, and is being sold as-is in the lone star state of Texas. Apart from the fact that it isn’t running due to its four year time out, this thing is beautiful. How could you not like the soccer ball rims, quad circle headlights, and those black EMS stripes? Inside, you’ll find an interior that brings you back to 1976, the year of That’s the Way I Like It by K.C. and The Sunshine Band, Dream On by Aerosmith, and You Should be Dancing by the Bee Gees. What a good year for music that was.
Pop the hood, and you’ll find a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injected four-cylinder engine that puts out a respectable 116 horsepower or so, when running. A four-speed manual transmission joins the engine. You’ll obviously need to bring a trailer to rescue this seventies Swedish swag mobile, but be grateful this particular one isn’t in as rough shape as the one Alex wrote about a few years ago.
All of the original sales documents, repair manual, brochure advertisement and even the jack are included with the car! I particularly like the old brochure picture of the sunglasses-wearing man sitting on the rear bumper like a boss. If I were to bring this home as a project car, that bad-ass SAAB 99 Euro plate would be the first thing I’d buy for it. Thanks to Kraig for tipping us off about this unique classic Saab, it’s a shame you live more than 3,000 miles away and can’t come pick it up!
